The difference between woven and knitted fabrics

If you are a designer, you will be able to tell the difference between woven and knitted fabrics by looking at them. However, it is not so easy to know the difference between the two. Because knitted fabrics are made of one continuous thread, it can stretch all over. Woven fabrics, on the other hand, stretch only on the diagonal, i.e., bias. Knitted fabrics are not dimensionally stable and have a higher degree of elasticity. Knits are cool and breathable fabrics, while wovens are relatively thick and windproof. Because they are produced using a single yarn, knitted fabrics are less expensive to manufacture in terms of labor compared to woven fabrics. In addition, knitted fabrics are wrinkle resistant, while woven fabrics hold creases well. In addition, woven fabrics are prone to wear and tear compared to knitted fabrics and should be well finished. Woven and knitted fabrics can be further distinguished on the following basis.

1. Appearance

The basic difference between woven and knitted fabrics is their yarn composition. Knitted fabrics are made up of single yarns that form continuous loops, producing a woven appearance. Woven fabrics, however, consist of multiple yarns that are twisted in such a way as to create a crisscross pattern.

2. Elasticity

Stretch fabrics are also one way to distinguish woven from knitted fabrics. Woven fabric does not stretch along its width, but it can stretch along its length. Knitted fabrics, however, stretch easily along their width and slightly less along their length.

3. Wrinkles

Woven and knitted fabrics behave differently in terms of wrinkle resistance. Knitted fabrics can be pressed easily, but they retain their shape after a period of time. Woven fabrics, on the other hand, will show wrinkles on their surface when pressed.
